Spotlight Science: The Forest

Saturday, December 6, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Join us at the Bell Museum to explore everything about the forest. Learn about trees and other plants, water, air, fire, and animals–even humans! Forests are rooted in many perspectives, and we’ll focus on how those come together in collaboration and co-management of resources, adaptation for climate change, and careers in forestry and beyond! This is an all-ages event. 


2025 Give to the Max Day

Help support our students! On Give to the Max Day, we are raising $2,000 to provide scholarships for the essential experiential learning experiences our students attend each year at the Cloquet Forestry Center. 


2025 UMN Arbor Day 2025

Wednesday, April 23, 12 - 3 p.m.

Come watch a tree planting job site in action as members of the Forestry Club, Tree Ascension Group (TAG), and Science and Engineering Student Board learn about tree planting best practices from UMN Landcare! Together, they'll  plant trees in one of the largest green spaces on the UMN-Twin Cities campus in St. Paul. Plus, TAG is hosting climbing opportunities nearby!


A Thousand Pines Film Screening and Discussion

Thursday, April 10, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Join us for a screening and discussion of A Thousand Pines, a documentary about a crew of 12 Mexican tree planters that travel the United States regrowing America’s forests. Follow Raymundo Morales as he leads a crew of workers who have to make the challenging decision to leave their families in rural Mexico to plant commercial pine forests in the United States. This tale of labor and family shines a light on the precarity of temporary work visas.


Stewart Udall: The Politics of Beauty Screening and Discussion

Eastern Finnish Approaches to Address Global Forest Bioeconomy Challenges

Monday, December 9 from 4 - 5:30 p.m.

This presentation given by UMN’s guests from Finland dives into some topical processes in the science-policy-practice interface of forest bioeconomy. Those include a competence center for forest-human-machine interplay; strategic research on just systemic transition of forestry; strong sustainability forestry services and forest planning; and a new EU-wide coordination and support action pursuing enhanced forest advisory skills and practices.

Interdisciplinary Art & Ecology Residency at the Acreage: A Retrospective Conversation

In this seminar, we will learn about the origin and vision of the Interdisciplinary Program for Art and Ecology at the Acreage and hear directly from participants, who are also students or alumni of the UMN NRSM and art graduate programs, about their work and experiences in it. 


Integrating Research and Extension in the Response to Aquatic Invasive Species

Wednesday, October 23, 4 - 5:30 p.m.

Daniel Larkin, Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology, and Megan Weber, Extension Educator at the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center and University of Minnesota Extension, will explore how collaborative integration of departmental research and Extension outreach can lead to more effective outcomes in responding to aquatic invasive species (AIS) and other issues in natural resource management.
