Urban Forest Management: Managing Greenspaces for People

This course is designed for upper level undergraduate and graduate students in urban forestry, forestry, natural resources, landscape architecture, landscape design and planning curriculi. This is a management course with less emphasis on tree care than FNRM 3501. Topics of study include: describing the structure and function of an urban forest; ecological, governance, and civic components of typical urban spaces where trees are planted; urban forest management practices, procedures, and allied professions; and urban forest planning in an era of global change.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the benefits, values, and disservices of trees and forests in human dominated environments.

  2. Identify key elements of green space and urban forest master plans.

  3. Collect and analyze forest and park inventory data to better understand plant diversity.

  4. Participate in community engagement and outreach planning.

  5. Evaluate common practices and literature in urban natural resources on the basis of their scientific merit.
