As wildfires continue to make their way through the Boundary Waters, Forest Resources researcher Lee Frelich continues to share valuable insight into northern Minnesota fire ecology.
Frelich told the Star Tribune on Wednesday that recent heat waves have caused the boreal forest to create “just the right or just the wrong configuration” of combustible fuels, making them extremely difficult and dangerous to put out.
Fires are a naturally beneficial part of this ecosystem, and officials must consider a wide range of factors when deciding whether to let them burn. Experts agree that these fires may continue to smolder until snowfall, especially those further in the wilderness and difficult to access. Frelich says this Minnesota wildfire season is a “type of logistical game” while Minnesotans wait on the weather or fire behavior to change the outlook.
