Students observe prescribed burn at the CFC

May 21, 2024
A group of young people in field gear and orange hard hats smile in a forested area near where prescribed burns are happening. An amber glow is cast across their faces. In the center of the group is a man with a drip torch, who is a member of the professional prescribed burn team at the CFC.
2024 Advanced Field Session students pose with a member of the fire crew near the prescribed burn taking place at the Cloquet Forestry Center in May 2024.

Field Silviculture students in our Advanced Field Session got to observe the prescribed burn at Cloquet Forestry Center in May! No worries, they stayed a safe distance away while the professionals did their work. It was an exceptional opportunity to learn more about the vital role fire plays in forest management as well as working with and learning from Fond Du Lac Band Of The Lake Superior Chippewa resource managers. And it made for some epic photos, too!

Learn more about this experience in the CFANS blog post "Lighting a Fire."

UMN students in field gear and orange hard hats, shown from behind, sit on logs while watching the prescribed burn smoulder at ground level. There is a dirt roadway between them and the burn.
Students observed the burn from a safe distance.

A member of the prescribed burn team, holding equipment, explains what's happening at the burn to UMN students. Everyone wears field gear and hard hats. The sky behind them is smoky with a golden hue.
A highlight for students was getting to learn from natural resource managers, including those from the Fond Du Lac Band.
