Biography

Linda Nagel is professor and department head of Forest Resources in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) at the University of Minnesota. She is co-lead for the Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change Network (ASCC) aimed at bringing together practitioners and scientists to co-develop adaptive forest management practices in the face of climate change. This high-impact research and outreach project is translating climate adaptation theory into practice, with 14 research sites across North America, and includes over 200 partners. She has previously held faculty positions at Michigan Technological University, the University of Minnesota where she also served as Director of Operations of the Cloquet Forestry Center and the Hubachek Wilderness Research Center, Colorado State University where she was also Department Head, and Utah State University where she served as dean of the S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney College of Natural Resources.

Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change Network

As co-lead for the Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change (ASCC) International Network, and in collaboration with the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS), Linda Nagel helped create a planning framework that brings scientists and managers together to co-develop replicated long-term experimental sites in forest types across the US and Canada. ASCC is a high-impact research and outreach project that is translating climate adaptation theory (i.e., resistance, resilience, transition) into practice, with 14 core sites and teams, includes over 200 partners, with numerous graduate students and post-docs researching each site. The ASCC Network coordinating team provides strategic vision, leadership, and decision-making for site development, facilitates collaborative workshops that utilize a set of core design principles, ensures adherence to experimental and data best practices, and provide network cohesion and direction. The work of ASCC is internationally recognized and is widely referenced in the forest management community as a flagship study in climate-smart forest management.
